Service, Not Theatre
When I was collecting my nomination papers, the comment I received too many times by too many female signatories was, “You are so brave”. I’ve thought about that comment, and the sentiment behind it, many, many times. We have denigrated public office to such a degree that too many people would never consider running for fear of what they will encounter in the service of their community.
Now, at the doors, I’m asked, daily, how will you handle/manage the politics “down there”. For women, the question is one of concern.
From the men, it is weighed down in how will I, as a soft-spoken female, be able to handle myself and serve Ward 1 with the overly macho politics practised too often at City Hall.
This is part of a larger discussion many residents have expressed that the politics in Hamilton is dysfunctional; nothing gets done and when it is done, it often has to be redone because it’s done so poorly the first time.
